"Any sales job will do" is a recipe for disaster
Get specific or get stuck
I see too many reps with "job hopper" looking resumes, and honestly, it's often because they never got crystal clear on what they actually wanted in the first place.
They jump at the first decent offer, only to find out it’s a mismatch for their skills, their personality, or their long-term goals.
It’s like going grocery shopping without a list when you’re starving. You’ll grab anything, and probably end up with a cart full of random crap you’re never going to eat.
Being vague about your ideal role is a direct path to taking the wrong job at the wrong company.
You end up at those places we all know: the ones with no plan, no real training, and a culture that burns you out.
Before you even think about applying:
Nail Down Your Ideal Role: Is it enterprise AE? Mid-market? Strategic accounts? Do you want to hunt, farm, or both? What exactly does the day-to-day look like in a job you'd actually enjoy and excel at?
Define Your Target Company Profile: Not just "SaaS." What size? Public, VC, PE, or bootstrapped? What kind of sales culture are you looking for? What buyer persona do you genuinely connect with?
Identify Your Non-Negotiables: What are the absolute deal-breakers for you?
Be honest with yourself. The more specific you are, the easier it is to filter out the noise and identify genuine opportunities.
It’s your best defense against another 9-month stint somewhere that drains your soul.
If you're finding it hard to get this level of clarity, that’s pretty normal. It's tough to see the full picture when you're in that frame.
It’s a big part of what I designed ChrisAI to help with – asking the right questions to help you define exactly what you’re looking for so you can target your search effectively.
