Get over yourself
In times of stress and strife, remember that you're nothing
When I first came to Austin the office I was working from was in an industrial park on the north side of town.
This was during a never stop grinding, work Saturday’s, exceed quota or die, period of my career. I’d absolutely torture myself when the results weren’t there.
One thing I’d do to get my mind right is, I’d drive around the neighborhood on my way back from lunch and take note of all the different no name businesses around the office.
I’d remind myself that within each of those offices there’s a sales rep who’s making a fine career for themselves selling flooring, lighting, HVAC, granite, etc. They were probably making more than I was, and they didn’t have to go through any bullshit dog and pony show on Linkedin to do it.
This always gave me peace, knowing that this was a viable option for me.
We get caught up in this myopic career thinking that SaaS is the be all end all when, at the end of the day, software is just a small sliver of all the good and services that are sold.
Take a look around your house. Everything you see had a sales rep involved to get whatever it is from the manufacturer to the place you bought it from.
Breath deep… Relax your jaw… Drop your shoulders… Chill TF out.
I have nothing to back this up, but I have a hunch that sales reps go through burnout more than folks in any other corporate function.
Emily Johnson used to be a liquor sales rep until she burned out and became a wellness coach focussed on helping others avoid and recover from burnout.
Had a great talk with her on my podcast. Check it out!
